Denim Tips Volume 3: Macrame Jean ShortDenim Tips Volume 3: Macrame Jean Short

July 2, 2009

TarDar! Here comes the gender neutral DoItYourself denim tip of the week.

Ladies: grab some scissors
Fellas: no macrameing required!

This one is pretty simple folks.

You can either go to the store and spend money for half a pair of pants with a prissy finished hem, or you can get crazy and hack a pair of flood pants you already own for free!

Here’s how you do it.

Find the pair you want, preferably nice soft denim. Put ‘em on and mark with a sharpy  1 full inch longer than the length you’d like the shorts to be.

Take your pants off and fold your jeans in half vertically so that the front half of the pants are showing, not the butt half.

Lay jeans on a flat surface. Make a 1 inch starter cut a 1/2 an inch short of the mark. Do not cut all the way across the leg; just enough to get past the thick side-hemming of your jeans. Do the same thing on the other leg – but don’t cut all the way.

You should then be able to rip all the way across the width of the legs if you chose a soft enough denim. When you get to the other thick hemline, use the scissors to get through it again.

Once you start washing and drying your shorts, the hemline will fray and they’ll gradually get shorter, but for now just put your shorts on. Proceed to nearest place where fly people go.
