Denim Tips Volume 6: Bleach!Denim Tips Volume 6: Bleach!

July 25, 2009

Ah, the fashion merry-go-round serves us up another dish of retro-tacky. Fifteen years ago, fashion America was still suffering an acid-wash hangover from the early 90’s and probably swore that they would never do acid-wash again. Well, thanks to French designer, Balmain, and the amnesia that fifteen years time will give you, acid wash is back. Way back. The bleachier the better. And unless you’ve got nearly $2000 bucks to shell out on the designer pair, it may be time for you brush up your DIY skills. Here we go!

One bottle of industrial strength bleach, one clean, empty spray bottle, a pair of rubber gloves and white vinegar. Then choose a pair of skinny jeans – any wash but white will do.

Find an area that you can use bleach in freely without ruining your surroundings. A bathtub and clear shower curtain should do the trick. Then soak the jeans in water.

Fill spray bottle up half way with bleach and begin spraying on jeans full strength. Spray as little or as much as you like.

Then refill spray bottle half with bleach and half with water. Spray around former bleach splotches. This will give the denim more than just two contrasting tones (looks a lot better).

Rinse jeans in water and vinegar to halt the bleaching action. Let dry and wear.

Avoid your mom or older siblings who hated the early 90’s. They’ll never get it.
