You have probably asked yourself, “Self – what do Michael Jackson, Derek Zoolander, Mozart, Davey Crockett, the Scots, the Mennonites, Nietzsche, The Bee Gee’s, the former Union of Soviet Socialists Republic and the Pittsburgh Pirates have in common?” The answer is cotton! Not just any cotton, but ‘high-cotton’ – a down-home term for ’splendid’ – y’all; their Eli Whitney? – the machine that has woven cotton into the jeans of history is ‘Timmy’ Wiebe – Maven of Style.

WIEBE. LITTLE MICHAEL. ZOOLANDER - Pioneers and avant-garde of the ‘Violent Fashion Movement’. As Little Michael was redefining popular music – so was Timmy Wiebe – in a like manner of familicide – smashing fashion barriers. Inventing, performing and steamrolling his older siblings at what has been memorialized as the first ‘Walk-off’ at Bonanza Days in Dawson Creek, British Columbia in 1969, Timmy Wiebe brought the crowd to a frenzy! In those days, childhood megastardom was still taboo and organizers modestly awarded Wiebe a trophy for ‘Best Dressed Boy at Bonanza Days – 1969’. At 3 years of age, Wiebe rounded off the triumvirate of childhood prodigies that have existed in human experience including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for a little ditty he wrote, and Davey Crockett for his role in the precocious murder of a bear under suspicious circumstances.

Timmy grew up in modest and frugal surroundings. As a descendant of Scottish and Mennonite grandparents, Wiebe’s first denim trappings were purchased as a labor of love by his beloved mother Hughene from Woodward’s Bargain Store in Calgary, Alberta. Purists disdain Wiebe’s ‘Bugle Boy’ period; so a discerning critique of the cultural etymology of the ‘Bugle Boy Period’ is apt. At the tender age of 14 years Wiebe worked at ‘Thrifty’s – The Place for Pants’ where he inhaled the inception of ‘Stonewash’ and it’s nuances. In the same historical period, the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball team was a World Series contender. From there it isn’t hard to imagine that Timmy might go to war for Bugle Boy Jeans if they combined stonewash with black and yellow belt and cuffs reminiscent of the Pittsburgh Pirates baseball uniforms; so when Timmy’s beloved mother gifted him such a pair of jeans – he welded them to his persona like the proud fashion warrior that he was; a ‘Flashdancer’ of denim per se.

NIETZSCHE. As cohorts took shelter from Disco – Wiebe descended and arose from Nietzsches’ ashes to carry on wearing the bell-bottom blue jeans of his fore-brother. The proletariat scoffed; and ‘Zarathustra’ Wiebe sayeth his sooth unto them: ‘I’m keeping them because they will be back in style one day’.

‘A warrior is measured by his scars’. Wiebe’s denim wore the scars of high school, undergraduate university, medical school and neurological surgical residency. The same jeans – day after day, month after month, year after year… Wiebe’s jeans were not only his clothing – they were his shield – against a cruel and vengeful world.

One might expect to hear a bit more bickering out of a band that has one married couple, two brothers (?), and a drummer with a bum toe – not to mention that seven year itch. Hardly the case. Generally just warm, fuzzy, feel‐good feelings. Ben: Hey, my name is Ben Haywood. I am originally from Northern California, but I live in Los Angles. The 2 words that immediately come to mind with Dan is, not brothers. And I have serious problems staying true in my heart when I’m in New York.

Dan: Wow.

Ben: You can’t walk a block without some 6‐foot, leggy thing passing you by. And dressed to the nines.

Dan: Yeah, there are a lot of models there.

Ben: And they wear a lot of black there, which is intimidating to me.

Ben: We tend to have a darker sound, but we kind of wanted something to juxtapose that. Those two words together are pleasant I guess.

Ben: No. Hence my two‐word description of Dan; not brothers.

Dan: Yeah, all hairlines aside, we aren’t brothers.

Heather: Vinyl. Vinyl is back!

Ben: I’ve been listening to Black Mountain and a lot of this band called Women. Hm, what else?

Heather: Don’t take all mine.

Todd: Sadly, I don’t have a record player. On my iPod though, I’ve recently downloaded that very uplifting Coldplay song [laughter].

Heather: It is a goodie.

Dan: It’s so up‐lifting.

Heather: Tweak Bird and Deerhunter.

Dan: Heather, for my birthday, got me this album I’ve been looking for FOREVER. Talk, Talk – Spirit of Eden. Heather somehow magically with her gorgeous and married powers managed to get this album.

Heather: And right on time for his birthday.

Dan: So that’s been in heavy rotation.

Ben: It just got deep in here.

Dan: Hopes and dreams would be telling my grandkids I was in a band.

Heather: So you’re having kids and grandkids? That’s so exciting.

Bullhead Newport Skinny Flare

I live in the American Gardens Building on W. 81st Street on the 11th floor. My name is Derek DeSpain. I’m twenty-4 years old. I believe in taking care of myself and a balanced diet and rigorous exercise routine. In the morning if my face is a little puffy I’ll put on an ice pack while doing stomach crunches. I can do 1000 now. After I remove the ice pack I use a deep pore cleanser lotion. In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask, which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

Sike… Christian Bale circa 2000? American Psycho? Yeahhh, now you remember (if not, get with the program).

Since my current move from Newport Beach, CA, I’m couch surfing across West Hollywood. There are about ten houses on every street up for rent. The problem is I’m very, VERY picky. There are certain things I look for in a house; clean lines, concrete floors, dark wood, white walls and stainless steel appliances, characteristics from my taste in interior design tend to show through in my everyday fashion.

Since I’ve been dressing myself, color has never been an option. I’m a minimalist. Black, white, maybe a bit of grey. I like my pants dark, old and worn. My tops long, drapey and thin. I tend to get a lot of style influences from fashion designers such as Hedi Slimane, Yves Saint Laurent and Rick Owens. Aww. This brings back tender memories of fathers and uncles and throw-up. You know, like when you’re out camping and your dad goes to collect wood for the fire, but along the way he falls into a ditch filled with nuclear waste and he comes back with your mom’s old cowboy boots on.
